Malaysia continues to be embroiled in controversy over the 7 naturalized players following the CAS ruling.

The CAS ruling suspending 7 naturalized players has caused a stir in Malaysian football. Regarding the nationality controversy, the MFL Chairman affirmed he lacks the power to comment or interfere.

The organizer of Malaysia's professional football leagues (MFL) declined to comment on the status of four naturalized players competing in the domestic league after the latest ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The case is sparking considerable debate among Malaysian football fans.

Previously, CAS upheld the 12-month suspension for seven players including Hector Hevel, Gabriel Palmero, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, Imanol Machuca, and Rodrigo Holgado. These players are barred from participating in official matches during the effective period of the penalty.

The MLF President addresses the nationality issue of Malaysia's naturalized players

“I cannot comment on such assumptions. Granting or revoking Malaysian citizenship is the government's prerogative, not MFL's.” That was the statement by MFL President, Dato’ Ab Ghani Hassan, when questioned by media about calls to strip the nationality of involved players following the CAS verdict.

According to the CAS ruling, despite the suspension, the players are permitted to engage in other football activities such as training with their respective clubs. However, they cannot play in official matches until the penalty period concludes.

CAS dismissed Malaysia's appeal

Upon receiving notification from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), MFL decided to suspend four players currently playing in the Malaysian national league. Among them, Hector Hevel, Joao Figueiredo, and Jon Irazabal are part of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), while Gabriel Palmero joined Kuching City Club in February this year.

The CAS ruling has sparked numerous debates within Malaysian public opinion, particularly concerning the issue of player naturalization. Nevertheless, MFL leadership maintains a cautious stance and asserts that the organization only implements professional regulations, while nationality matters entirely fall under the government's jurisdiction.
