Tottenham endured a heavy defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and coach Igor Tudor attracted notice due to his strained reaction and premature exit from the interview after the match.
Coach Igor Tudor appeared cold and evaded many questions after Tottenham's heavy 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The loss in Madrid further extended Spurs' disappointing season.
From the very first minutes, Tottenham fell apart as Atletico scored four goals within just 22 minutes. Two of those stemmed from serious errors by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Given the situation, Tudor made a controversial decision by withdrawing the 22-year-old goalkeeper from the field, even though he himself had given Kinsky the starting opportunity instead of Guglielmo Vicario.
After the match, when interviewed by TNT Sports, Tudor did not directly take responsibility for the loss. He also defended his early goalkeeper substitution. The Croatian coach stated that in his 15 years as a manager, he rarely made such a choice: “In 15 years as a coach, I have almost never done this. But today it was necessary to protect the player and the whole team,” Tudor said.
According to him, replacing Kinsky was not a spontaneous decision. Tudor affirmed that before the match he believed this young goalkeeper was capable of playing in the context of Vicario facing significant pressure: “Before the match, it was the right choice for our situation. Toni is a good goalkeeper. Of course, after everything happened, people might say it wasn't the correct decision,” he explained.
Tudor also revealed he had a private conversation with Kinsky after the match to encourage the young goalkeeper. “I explained to Toni that he is a good goalkeeper. Unfortunately, mistakes happened in such a big match,” he stated.
Although Tottenham later scored two goals to reduce the deficit, Atletico still easily secured a 5-2 victory. Tudor admitted his team was overwhelmed from the start of the match: “We started the match terribly. The team is in a fragile state, and that made everything difficult,” he said.
The interview ended in a rather tense atmosphere as Tudor left before the host could conclude. This situation surprised commentators in the studio, who even criticized the Tottenham strategist's attitude.
Former goalkeeper Joe Hart believed Tudor's reaction did not send any positive message for the team. Amid Tottenham experiencing a series of poor results, the future of the Croatian coach at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is becoming a major question.
